About Dr. Gillingham
Personal Statement - Akira Gillingham, MD
My interest in surgery began at a young age when I would shadow my grandfather at work. I was deeply inspired by this kind and compassionate man and the impact he had on his patients’ lives and decided to follow in his footsteps.
After medical school, I completed my residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Abington Hospital, where I had the opportunity to work alongside Drs Lucente and Murphy. I was drawn to the field of urogynecology because of the innovative treatments and surgical procedures used to treat pelvic floor disorders, but also because I would really listen to my patients and work with them to develop a personalized treatment plan. After residency I moved to Chicago and completed my fellowship training in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery at Northwestern University.
I am excited to return to Pennsylvania to work alongside my mentors. I am joined by my wife Arianna and our three-legged rescue cat Nemo (don’t worry it doesn’t stop her from running around and climbing up the furniture)! When I am not at work, I enjoy traveling, cycling, playing violin, and discovering new restaurants.
